First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Jill Biden’s “Joining Forces” initiative to support and medically treat the nation’s veterans is spanning medical schools nationwide, and while LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans is among them, the initiative has been in place there for four years, thanks to Paul Harch.
The initiative, announced Jan. 11, combatted post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries, or TBI, in veterans.
Harch, clinical associate professor and director of LSUHSC New Orleans’ Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care Department, has been treating veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, since 2008.

HBOT So why does the government keep blocking its use?
Research from health pioneer (and former ANH-USA board member) Dr. Paul G. Harch published in the Journal of Neurotrauma indicates that hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is able to dramatically help veterans with post-concussion syndrome (a form of traumatic brain injury) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dr. Harch is an associate clinical professor of medicine at Louisiana State University in New Orleans.

PAST NATIONAL COMMANDER

The enclosed September and October issues of The American Legion Magazine contain a series of two articles growing out of the investigation and findings of the TBI/PTS Ad Hoc Committee. I serve as the Chairman of the Committee. The Committee was appointed for one year, but will be re-appointed by our newly elected National Commander next week at our National Executive Meetings in Indianapolis.
This was to be a two part series. However, the November issue will contain an article based on a study that has been ongoing for decades on the psychological effect of combat experience.
The American Legion is deeply committed to seeing that our veterans who are suffering from these injuries receive the care they deserve. As such, we have called for meetings of the House Veterans Affairs Committee and the Committee Chairman, Congressman Jeff Miller, Florida, has instructed his staff to work with us in preparation for the meetings.
Stay tuned.
